San Diego Sports et Cetera : San Diego-Ensenada Race Starts Today
The host Southwestern Yacht Club has received 119 entries for its 26th San Diego-to-Ensenada, Mexico, race, which will start at noon today.
The race, known as The Little Ensenada (to differentiate it from the 125-mile Newport Beach-Ensenada race) begins outside the entrance to San Diego Harbor and finishes at the Ensenada Harbor. The race covers 62 miles; the monohull record is 6 hours 11 minutes by John Landon’s Kathmandu in 1986.
GOLF
U.S. International University is tied for seventh, and San Diego State is 13th after the first round of the 54-hole Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico Golf Course.
Stanford and Tulsa are tied for the lead at 306. USIU has 319, and SDSU is at 335. Cathy Mockett of Tulsa is the individual leader at one-under par 72. SDSU’s Jenifer Holt shot a 78 and is tied for 13th.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Debbie Guck and Iris Womack had eight kills apiece as Fresno Pacific defeated visiting Point Loma Nazarene College, 15-8, 15-5, 15-5 in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. PLNC (9-4, 2-3) led only once, 4-3, in the second game. Fresno Pacific, ranked No. 4 among NAIA schools, is 22-5 and 4-1 in the GSAC.
