JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Ventura Contains Valley, 24-14

Valley College would have had a difficult time penetrating visiting Ventura’s defense with possession of the ball. But Ventura made that impossible Saturday night because it didn’t allow the Monarch offense to take the field for 20 of the second half’s 30 minutes.

And Valley, which led, 14-7, in the second quarter, thus dropped a 24-14 decision to a Western State Conference opponent.

Ventura, which improved to 5-0, 4-0 in conference play, went into the game with three shutouts and kept Valley out of the end zone in the second half.

The Pirates made the most of a ball-control offense, four sacks and numerous Valley mistakes on offense to catch and pass the Monarchs. Valley (1-4, 1-3) had taken a 7-0 lead on its second series when Donald Dozier scored from four yards and Bryan Kochner added the extra point.

Ventura tied the score after the ensuing kickoff with Fernando Green’s 14-yard run and Ty Hewitt’s kick. The key play was a 25-yard completion from Todd Paffhausen to John Johnson on third and 14 from Ventura’s 40-yard line.

Valley took a 14-7 lead when it drove 93 yards in eight plays, the last a 13-yard pass from backup quarterback Trendell Williams to tight end Sean Brown. Williams, who was 11 of 20 for 229 yards, also hit Rodney Guy for 33 yards and Marcus Bridges Jr. for 22.

Ventura responded with two successive scores in a three-minute span of the second quarter. With 3:52 left, Scott Patchett caught a pass deflected by Lamark Allen in the end zone for a 13-yard score. Then Dan White intercepted Williams’ pass on Valley’s ensuing drive and, four plays later, Ryan Rapoza--who rushed for 119 yards in 14 carries--danced into the end zone from 21 yards with 47 seconds left.
