Soviet Nuclear Test Held at Semipalatinsk

MOSCOW — The Soviet Union carried out an underground nuclear test Thursday with a force of between 20 and 75 kilotons at a testing site in the central Asian republic of Kazakhstan, the official news agency Tass reported.
Tass said the test was conducted near Semipalatinsk “with the aim of perfecting military technology.”
