TOP PERFORMERS

Loara running back Coy Collins rushed for 149 yards and scored three touchdowns, including one on an 80-yard punt return, to lead the Saxons to a 27-0 victory over Katella. Capping the evening, Collins was named Loara’s Homecoming king.

Shane Sherman gained 159 yards in 31 carries to lead Edison to a 28-25 victory over Fountain Valley. Sherman scored touchdowns on runs of seven and 12 yards.

SHOWDOWNS

Paul Shaheen ran for 103 yards and a touchdown in 22 carries and Tony Solliday completed eight of 14 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown as Capistrano Valley knocked off top-ranked Mission Viejo, 27-14, in a meeting of South Coast League unbeatens.

LAST-MINUTE HEROICS Shad Vickers scored on a 33-yard run with 4:03 to play and break a 7-7 tie, lifting Irvine to a 14-7 South Coast League victory over San Clemente. Vickers ran for 144 yards in 17 carries.

Greg Windle threw his third touchdown pass of the second half--a 33-yarder to Steve Friedman with 1 minute 33 seconds to play--to rally Troy from a 16-point halftime deficit for a 20-16 Freeway League victory over Fullerton.

ODDS & ENDS

Special teams player Josh Beldon filled in for injured teammate Nick Cantu at defensive end and had two of Tustin’s four sacks. The Tillers not only sacked Newport Harbor High School quarterback Stephen Scheck four times, they kept the Sailors out of the end zone on four downs from the one in a 10-7 victory at Newport Harbor’s Davidson Field.

John Finohui scored on runs of one and 26 yards as Buena Park ended a 28-game Freeway League losing streak by coming from behind to defeat Sonora, 21-13.

Fountain Valley running back Rob Dubar, who had missed three games because of an ankle injury, was reinjured Friday night in a 28-25 loss to Edison. Dubar left the game midway through the first quarter after he had gained 50 yards in three carries.

Santa Ana Valley, a team that scored 31 points last week in a victory over Canyon, was shut out by El Modena Friday. The Falcons gained only 77 yards, all on the ground, against the Vanguards.

Winless El Dorado dropped its seventh game in a row, a 33-0 Empire League loss to Esperanza. At least El Dorado fans didn’t have to see the result on the scoreboard; a second-half power failure forced officials to keep the score and official time.
