Man Is Killed Trying to Aid County Driver
SAN DIEGO — Russell McCampbell, a 31-year-old San Diego man, was running to help a stricken Orange County driver Wednesday when he was hit and killed by a car.
The California Highway Patrol reported that John Antenucci of Laguna Niguel was driving north on I-805 at 3:40 a.m. when he took the Balboa Avenue off-ramp, ran through a sign, jumped the curb, plowed over a flower patch and ended up back on the freeway exit. His car rolled and ended upright.
The CHP said McCampbell ran across the freeway to aid Antenucci, but another vehicle then struck Antenucci’s car, which in turn hit McCampbell. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Antenucci was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Sharp Memorial Hospital.
