POP LP CHART : Milli Vanilli Takes Over at No. 1
Milli Vanilli, the dance-music duo that’s one of this year’s top new acts, tops both Billboard magazine pop charts. “Girl You Know It’s True,” a 4-million seller, ousted Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation 1814” from the top spot. Also, the duo’s latest single, “Blame It on the Rain,” moved up one notch to the top of the pop singles chart. The Grateful Dead’s “Built to Last” (No. 28) and Taylor Dayne’s “Can’t Fight Fate” (No. 56) are racing up the pop chart. Eric Clapton’s “Journeyman” entered the chart at a strong No. 70.
* The legion of critics who joyfully trashed the hard-rock/metal band Whitesnake’s last album--a smash hit--were hoping it was just a fluke. But it looks like fans were really smitten by Whitesnake--and apparently there’s no antidote. “Slip of the Tongue,” the new album by David Coverdale’s group debuted at a mighty No. 36.
