HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Galardi Outlasts Rostovsky to Advance to Section Final
Brooke Galardi of Bishop’s outlasted La Jolla’s Leanne Rostovsky in a two-and-a-half-hour singles match to advance to today’s final at 2 p.m. at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club. The top-seeded Galardi will meet Nikki Willette of Serra, the tournament’s third seed.
Galardi rallied to defeat the fourth-seeded Rostovsky, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Willette defeated Branaca Elsberry of Bishop’s, 6-3, 6-1. Elsberry, seeded sixth, had ousted second-seeded Savaka Kimura of Poway in the quarterfinals.
It will be an all-Torrey Pines final in the doubles as the top-seeded team of Krista Kuechler and Erin Bohrnstedt will play second-seeded Kim Sherrod and Kelly Kestler in the 12:45 match.
Kechler and Bohrnstedt defeated Poway’s Jodi Rosano and Leah Splavec, 6-4, 6-7 (8-6), 6-4 and Sherrod and Kestler defeated Bishop’s Anna Vortmann and Janine Schiess, 7-5, 6-4.
Water Polo
Top-seeded Coronado advanced to its seventh section championship match in eight years with a 10-8 victory over Monte Vista at the Jewish Community Center. Coronado will meet third-seeded Poway, which defeated second-seeded Valhalla, 17-11.
Saturday’s championship game will be a rematch of last year’s final where Coronado defeated Poway, 11-9. Coronado has won four of the last six section titles. Third-seeded Poway’s victory over No. 2 Valhalla avenged an earlier loss to the Norsemen in overtime.
Field Hockey
Defending champion and No. 1-seeded Serra defeated No. 6 Torrey Pines, 6-0, in a section girls’ field hockey semifinal, advancing to a rematch of last year’s final against No. 2 Mira Mesa. The teams will play Saturday at noon at Diegueno Junior High in Encinitas.
Mira Mesa, which was beaten, 2-1, by Serra in last year’s final, defeated Fallbrook, 2-1, to earn another chance. Sara Hallock and Kisa West scored first-half goals for Mira Mesa. Jeannie Palculich scored for Fallbrook.
Fallbrook and Torrey Pines will meet for third place Saturday at 10.
