Viktor Petrenko of the Soviet Union, displaying near-perfect double, triple and combination jumps, won the men’s singles title in the 1989 International Free Skating Competition at Kobe, Japan.
The 20-year-old Petrenko, who led after the original program competition, got three 5.9 scores out of a possible 6.0 for technical merit and four 5.9s for artistic impression in the free skating.
Alexander Fadeev of the Soviet Union was second overall after finishing second in the original program and third in the free skating. Kurt Browning of Canada, the 1989 world champion, was third. Erik Larson of the United States was fourth.
