NHL ROUNDUP : Oilers Slide Past Toronto, Take Smythe Division Lead
Esa Tikkanen and Jari Kurri each scored two goals Sunday night as the Edmonton Oilers extended their winning streak to five games and took the Smythe Division lead with a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Edmonton.
Edmonton goaltender Bill Ranford stopped 37 of 40 shots by Toronto.
Glenn Anderson also scored for the Oilers, who moved one point ahead of the idle Calgary Flames.
Buffalo 4, St. Louis 3--Defenseman Grant Ledyard scored his second goal of the season midway through the third period and the Sabres downed the Blues, 4-3, at Buffalo to remain the only NHL team with an unbeaten home record.
The Sabres are 12-0-1 in Memorial Auditorium and have won 11 straight games at home.
Boston 2, Philadelphia 1--Bob Gould scored with 7:17 left at Philadelphia to lift the Bruins to a victory over the Flyers.
Dave Poulin scored for the Flyers early in the second period and Boston’s Randy Burridge tied it five minutes later.
Detroit 4, Chicago 3--Steve Yzerman scored two power-play goals and assisted on Gerard Gallant’s tie-breaker, becoming the fifth player in Red Wing history to reach 600 points, in a victory over the Blackhawks at Chicago.
The Blackhawks have lost five straight games and have a winless streak of 0-6-1.
Vancouver 6, Minnesota 5--Trevor Linden scored a power-play goal at 13:14 of the third period and the Canucks got past the North Stars at Vancouver.
Linden scored two goals for Vancouver, which won for the first time in seven games. Mike Gartner had three goals for Minnesota, which lost its fifth consecutive road game.
