PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Wins a Real Marathon

Paig Parish made a three-point shot with five seconds remaining in the first overtime to tie the score and Newport Harbor High School dominated the second overtime as the Sailors defeated San Clemente, 93-80, in a consolation semifinal game of the San Dieguito boys’ basketball tournament Monday in Encinitas.

San Clemente led, 74-65, with 45 seconds remaining in the first overtime, but Parish’s shot capped Newport Harbor’s rally. The Sailors (6-2) outscored the Tritons, 17-4, in the second overtime as they made 10 of 11 free throws in the period.

Parish led Newport Harbor with 25 points, and Eddie Martinez added 23. San Clemente’s Eddie Morgan led all scorers with 29 points and sent the game into overtime when he made one of two free throws after time expired in the fourth quarter.

In other San Dieguito tournament games:

El Modena 65, San Marcos 48--Gregg Gottlieb scored 25 points and Jeff Leedom had 22 points and eight rebounds to lead El Modena (4-3 in the other consolation semifinal game. Robert Dadant had eight assists for the Vanguards, who play Newport Harbor at 4:45 p.m. today for the consolation championship.

Trabuco Hills 88, Valencia 69--Randy Kriech scored 26 points and Beau Hossler had 25 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals and seven assists to lead the Cougars (6-5) in the fifth-place semifinal game. Trabuco Hills plays San Diego El Camino at 2:45 p.m. today for fifth place. John Wilson and Paul Tibbie each scored 20 points for Valencia.

In the Orange Lutheran girls’ basketball tournament:

Rosary 52, Orange Lutheran 29--Diane Wiskus, the tournament’s most valuable player, led Rosary, scoring a game-high 11 points in the championship game.

In the Bolsa Grande girls’ basketball tournament:

Rancho Alamitos 69, Anaheim 17--Playing in her first game after recovering from mononucleosis, Jenny Newsom scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Rancho Alamitos (3-1) in the first round.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Loara 54, Santa Maria 34--Tracy Titus had 23 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots for the Saxons (3-5) at Santa Maria.
