BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Marina Proves It’s a Team Game in Victory Over Long Beach Millikan
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Cherokee Parks isn’t the only attraction on Marina High School’s basketball team anymore.
Parks put up typically impressive numbers Friday night--19 points, 18 rebounds and five blocked shots--in Marina’s 76-51 victory over Long Beach Millikan.
But these days, Parks, a 6-foot-11 junior center, has a solid supporting cast around him.
Parks still is a dominant figure, but Friday night the Vikings (6-4) had four players score in double figures.
Brant Shelor, a 6-5 junior, led all scorers with 25 points with a nice blend of jump shots and tip-ins underneath the basket.
Shelor also had 15 rebounds, blocked two shots and led the team with six assists.
“That versatility is the whole key to us to be successful this year in the Sunset League,” Marina Coach Steve Popovich said. “We’ve been trying to get our other guys going in the offense more.”
Marina also got 11 points from each of its backcourt players. Point guard Sean Haselrig scored most of his points by penetrating for layups, and shooting guard Travis Boyd bombed away from the outside for three three-point baskets.
Millikan (9-3) was led by guard Ibn Maddred with 14 points and 6-5 forward Pat Thacker with 13. Demetrius Mayhand added 10.
