Relief Groups Give Aid to Romania; Airlift Is Stalled
VIENNA — Aid poured into Romania by road and rail Monday from relief organizations around the world, but an airlift was delayed amid conflicting reports on whether Bucharest airport is open.
Fierce fighting around the airport forced flights to be diverted to other places, such as Varna in neighboring Bulgaria.
Hungarian Defense Ministry spokesman Gyorgy Keleti said the Hungarian army had delivered 81 tons of food to neighboring Romania, where thousands of people have been killed and wounded in a revolution that toppled President Nicolae Ceausescu.
He said Finnish, Belgian and Danish military planes had landed at Budapest airport with medical supplies that would be carried in by road.
