Venice : Students to Ride in Parade
Five students from Broadway Elementary School in Venice will ride with Muppet characters Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog in the 1990 Rose Parade on New Year’s Day in Pasadena.
The students, the Muppets and last year’s Tournament of Roses Queen Charmaine Beth Shryock will ride a float sponsored by Transamerica Life Cos. Transamerica supports numerous activities at the Westside school through the Adopt-a-School program of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Sixth-graders Johnnie Aqatep, Jahi Farris, Alberto Rascon, Roberto Solis and Elvia Vega earned their places on the float by winning an essay contest judged by the Transamerica staff. The children wrote their views on how people can learn to live in peace, in keeping with the parade’s theme, “A World of Harmony.”
The Transamerica float, called “Lassoed by Love,” will feature a dude ranch motif. All of the riders will wear Western garb. In addition, Kermit and Miss Piggy will sing “Happy Trails” and “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds” along the parade route, via the taped voices of Muppet creators Jim Henson and Frank Oz.
