HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Sweetwater Loses First to Best in Washington
Sweetwater suffered its first loss of the season, 75-51, to Seattle Garfield, the No. 1-ranked team in the state of Washington, in the championship game of the Burnaby Wildcat Invitational in Vancouver, Canada, Saturday night.
For the Red Devils (12-1), Joe McDowell scored 15 points, and Carlos Campbell added 14. Pepper Day led the winners with 17 points. Fred Hardwell added 13 and Eric Bird 12.
McDowell and Campbell were named to the all-tournament team.
Brea Tournament
Fallbrook 76, El Dorado 69--The Warriors’ strong first and third quarters, when they outscored El Dorado, 24-18 and 18-13, enabled them to finish fifth at Brea High School. Chris Miller scored 26 points, 20 in the second half, to pace Fallbrook (9-3). Teammate Eric Enockson had 10 of his 14 points in the first quarter. Mike Bradach had 19 points for El Dorado (8-3).
Ontario Kiwanis Tournament
St. Augustine 69, Warren 6 (LA) 68--With the game tied, 66-66, and 10 seconds left, the Saints’ Eric Dent hit the first end of a one-and-one and missed the second, but Brian Cantwell rebounded and made the basket to put St. Augustine up by three, 69-66. Warren hit a layup, but time ran out and the Saints (9-5) finished fifth in the tournament in Ontario. Cantwell, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 28 points. Teammate Greg Sedlacek added 12 points, and Paul Mossuto had 11 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists.
Santana Tournament
Hilltop 77, Grossmont 57--In the seventh-place game, Hilltop’s Chris White had 17 points to tie Grossmont’s Jared Larson for game-high honors, but the Lancers had four other players in double figures: Chris Costello with 11 and Carlos Marques, Kevin Hobdy, Carlos Gonzales all with 10.
Southwest 55, Santana 48--Devin Patterson’s 22 points and 14 rebounds lifted the Raiders (4-10) past host Santana in the fifth-place game. Joe Cruz scored 18 points for Southwest, and Ross Piper’s 12 points led the Sultans.

Nonleague
Prince Ruppert 51, El Capitan 48--Audrey Dennison scored 14 points and teammate Nina Phillipson added 12 to lead visiting Prince Ruppert of Canada at El Capitan. Melissa Hadfield had 12 points for the Vaqueros (2-5).
