BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Beats Woodbridge
John Paulsen scored 22 points and Warren Johnson added 21 to lead Corona del Mar High School to a 68-53 victory over Woodbridge in a nonleague basketball game Friday at Woodbridge.
The Sea Kings (9-6) got off to a slow start and trailed, 16-12, at the end of the first quarter. However, Corona del Mar outscored Woodbridge, 21-12, in the second quarter to take a 33-28 halftime lead.
Corona del Mar never trailed in the second half.
In other nonleague games:
Brea-Olinda 88, Sonora 45--Keith Walker had 30 points and Rodney Stewart 14 to lead Brea-Olinda (11-3). Greg Farlow had 13 for host Sonora.
Fullerton 80, Covina 63--Rene Arias had 26 points and Chris Rubal added 12 points, including six free throws in the fourth quarter, and five rebounds for the Indians (3-10) at home. Covina is 4-8.
Savanna 74, Glenn 55--Forward Keith Rodriguez scored 26 points and had 13 rebounds to pace Savanna (10-6). Forward Mario Valdez led Glenn (3-8) with 19 points.
Troy 58, Valencia 56--Jermaine Butler had a tip-in with one second left for Troy. Mike Abbott had 16 points to lead Troy (4-6).
Western 84, Bellflower 57--Sam Sabbara had 37 points, including a school-record seven three-pointers, and eight assists and Robbie Shelton had 17 points and nine rebounds for Western (9-4) at home. Scott Moten had 28 points for Bellflower.
Newport Harbor 80, Costa Mesa 67--Guard Paig Parish scored 22 points and had eight assists for host Newport Harbor (11-4). Forward Eddie Martinez added 15 points and guard Huy Nguyen 16 for the Sailors. Xavier Hanna led Costa Mesa with 21 points.
