NHL ROUNDUP : Canucks Power Way to Rare Road Win, 5-2
The Vancouver Canucks have been guilty of terrible timing on the road this season.
But you would never have known it Friday night as the Canucks got power-play goals from Igor Larianov and Paul Reinhart early in the third period and went on to defeat the Washington Capitals, 5-2, at Landover, Md. It was only the Canucks’ second win in their last 14 road games.
“We can’t let something like this go to waste,” Reinhart said. “When we had the chance to win it, we came through. We had the power play, the five-minute major, and we got the goal we needed.
“We haven’t done that this year. We haven’t scored the goals at the right time. We have gotten great goaltending this year and we’ve wasted it. Not tonight.”
The pair of power-play goals came after the Canucks had gone 21 consecutive man-advantage situations without scoring.
Larianov’s goal at 3:15 of the final period snapped a 2-2 tie. He took a pass from Vladimir Krutov behind the goal, skated to the edge of the crease and stuffed a shot past Washington goalie Bob Mason.
The Canucks had not scored more than one power-play goal in 13 games, posting only five during that span.
Calgary 6, Hartford 4--Gary Roberts reached a career high for goals, scoring two to lead the Flames to victory at Calgary.
The goals increased Roberts’ season total to 23, eclipsing by one his best previous production, established last season.
An Olympic Saddledome crowd of 20,107 saw Calgary extend its unbeaten streak to three (2-0-1) and move within four points of Smythe Division-leading Edmonton.
Joey Mullen also had two goals for the Flames. Paul Ranheim and Joel Otto scored one apiece.
