Horace Stoneham, Who Moved Giants to San Francisco, Dies
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Horace C. Stoneham, who shocked New York when he moved the Giants to San Francisco, died Sunday in a nursing home in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 86.
Stoneham spent the last 13 years in retirement near the Giants’ spring training complex. He sold the club in 1976 after having served as its principal owner and president for 40 years. Under Stoneham’s ownership in New York, the Giants won four National League pennants and the 1954 World Series.
Dodger owner Peter O’Malley said, “He was very much at home watching the game of baseball. My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Stoneham and his family.”
The funeral will be held Wednesday in Scottsdale.
