VALLEY ROUNDUP : Master’s Breezes Past Northeastern Illinois

Four Master’s players scored in double figures and the Mustangs made 26 of 28 free throws in the second half to bury Northeastern Illinois, 84-67, in a nonconference game at home.

Guard Jason Webster scored a team-high 21 points, forward Jeff Newton had 14 and forward Tom Bruner and guard Damon Greer added 10 apiece to pace the Mustangs (10-9).

The Mustangs led, 30-25, at halftime. Northeastern Illinois (2-13) stayed within striking range, 32-27, for the first 1 1/2 minutes of the second half before The Master’s produced a six-point play.

Webster made a jump shot and Newton buried consecutive free throws after a technical foul on Northeastern Illinois’ bench. Webster got the ball back and sank another jumper, giving the Mustangs a 38-27 advantage.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 90, Bethany Bible 69--Jeff deLaveaga scored 31 points and had six steals to lead Cal Lutheran (2-13) to its second consecutive win. Mike Demeter scored 22 points and David Rowlands had 15 for Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran shot 52 percent (35 of 68) from the field in registering its highest point total of the season.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Royal 69, Thousand Oaks 68 (OT)--Greg Gray hit two free throws with 17 seconds left in overtime to give Royal (14-3, 3-0) the most wins in a season since 1971-72.

Russell Myers scored 17 points, including a steal and layin that tied the game, 66-66, in overtime. Chris Moriarty scored 22 points for the Highlanders.

Camarillo 58, Channel Islands 45--David Harbour scored a game-high 32 points to give Camarillo (10-5, 1-2) its first Marmonte League win.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Kennedy 1, El Camino Real 0--Keith West scored with a minute remaining to lead the Golden Cougars (8-0-1, 4-0).

Granada Hills 2, Chatsworth 0--Goalkeeper Erick Miseroy notched his fourth consecutive shutout in leading the host Highlanders (7-4, 4-0).

Van Nuys 1, Monroe 1--Midfielder Cuneyt Karacuha scored the tying goal late in the first half and goalkeeper Carlos Rubalcava made eight saves for Van Nuys (3-3-2, 1-1-2).

Grant 3, Reseda 0--Striker Carlos Lenus’ two goals gave the host Lancers (4-2-1, 2-0-1) a 2-0 advantage at intermission. Tendar Maleki made 10 saves in goal for Grant.

Birmingham 2, Poly 1--Trailing, 1-0, at halftime, the Braves (6-2, 3-0) got second-half goals from midfielder Sae Kim and striker Mario Martinez to steal a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Birmingham.

Royal 2, Newbury Park 1--Matt Brinkman scored both goals to lead the Highlanders (12-2-1, 2-0) in a Marmonte League match at home.

Brinkman scored on a penalty kick 15 minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 tie.
