WORLD IN BRIEF : SYRIA : French Nazi Hunter Klarsfeld Expelled
Syrian officials expelled French Nazi hunter Serge Klarsfeld after he sought to meet with Syrian President Hafez Assad to demand the extradition of a Nazi war criminal, Klarsfeld’s wife, Beate, said. For years, the Klarsfelds have been tracking Alois Brunner, the right-hand man to Nazi SS chief Adolf Eichmann and now regarded as the most-wanted Nazi war criminal. Brunner was sentenced to death in absentia in France in 1954 for taking part in the deportation to death camps of more than 120,000 Jews. Serge Klarsfeld says Brunner, now 78, lives with police protection in Damascus under the name George Fischer. Syria insists that Brunner is not in the country.
