Robert Johnson, district chairman of the El Segundo YMCA, has announced that Karen Ackland will head the 1990 Sustaining Membership Campaign. Ackland has been active with the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce and is the chamber’s president-elect. She is secretary to the board of the El Segundo Employers Assn. and has held various positions with the Centinela Valley YMCA. The goal of this year’s El Segundo YMCA drive is $30,000.
Three South Bay high school juniors have been named semifinalists in McDonald’s 1990 national “Black History Makers of Tomorrow” program. They are Myescha Lafaye Ervin and Shretta Latrice Gibson of Leuzinger High School in Hawthorne, and Edmond James Mouton Jr. of Gardena, who attends King-Drew Medical Magnet High School.
They are among 30 Southern California students selected from hundreds of honor students. All of the applicants were students with top grades, various extracurricular activities, strong writing skills and proven leadership abilities. Local semifinalists will be honored at an awards luncheon Feb. 27 at the Hyatt Wilshire Hotel and during activities throughout February, “Black History Month.” Names of national finalists will be announced later.
Four Palos Verdes Peninsula residents will lead workshops at the Los Angeles County Federation of Republican Women leadership seminar at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel on Jan. 30. They are Mary Benz, Bobbie Pine, Marge Flynn and Barbara Glushenko.
Hugh W. Bunch of Redondo Beach marked his 100th birthday on Jan. 11.
Bunch, who grew up in Arkansas, started his working life as a stagecoach driver. He later moved to Oklahoma, where he worked in an oil refinery and became a union leader. Bunch retired atthe age of 67, and he and his wife moved back to Arkansas. He continued to live there after his wife died and only recently agreed to move to Redondo Beach, where he now lives with a son, D. P. (Dan) Bunch, and his son’s wife, Roberta.
Rancho Palos Verdes resident John C. Fitzgerald recently received the “Teke Alumnus of the Year” award from Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity. Previous recipients include former President Ronald Reagan; the late George Halas, owner and coach of the Chicago Bears; actor and entertainer Danny Thomas; Richard (Digger) Phelps, basketball coach of the University of Notre Dame, and Dr. William A. Fowler, 1984 Nobel laureate. The award is given for outstanding career accomplishment and performance. Fitzgerald, a partner in Los Angeles-based Seidler-Fitzgerald Public Finance, received his MBA degree from Cornell University and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering at Cal State Sacramento.
