Nation IN BRIEF : UTAH : Quayle Does Not See Drastic Defense Cuts
Vice President Dan Quayle said democratic reforms in Eastern Europe will not result in drastic cuts in U.S. defense spending or immediate windfalls for domestic programs. Quayle, in Park City, Utah, for the fourth annual Senators Ski Cup, which raises funds for a children’s medical center, said: “There’s been much discussion that somehow peace is breaking out all over the world, that somehow we don’t have to invest in national security, that we can in fact, for all practical purposes, fold up tent, declare victory and come home. Well, that’s not the case.” He said the two superpowers are moving toward peaceful relations “because America has been strong.”
