Worst Date? Teens Live to Tell About It
That terrible, horrible, devastating dating experience--the one you’ll be talking about the rest of your adult life--may have happened last weekend or even last night . . . or could be just a blind date away.
Hot Topics wonders: “What’s the worst date you’ve ever been on?”
“My date and I decided to see a movie. We didn’t know it at the time, but my date’s parents were sitting one row behind us. Halfway through the movie, I got up enough nerve to kiss her. As we were walking out of the theater, we ran into her parents. They simply stated, ‘I think it’s time to go home now.’ ”
Shaun Travers, 18,
senior, La Quinta
“I met this guy and he asked me to go out on a date, so I said OK. On the phone he told me that he had a girlfriend and that they weren’t getting along. So when he came to pick me up, my sister answered the door and I heard her say, ‘What are you doing here?’ I found out later that it was my sister’s secret boyfriend.”
Airyn Simpson, 16,
sophomore, Edison
“We were on a boat preparing for the Long Beach parade. My girlfriend and I were alone. We were waiting for my friends to get back from Pizza Hut. When they came back, they brought back my girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. She ignored me for the rest of the night and flirted with her ex-boyfriend.”
Jaysen Kitchens, 17,

“My worst date was with a girl I didn’t really know, but we got into three arguments. Right then and there, I knew she was for me.”
Keith Cruz, 18,
senior, Savanna
“When I told the girl I was 20 but I was really only 16. Everything was going good until I got pulled over for speeding. The policeman asked for my license and asked how old I was. I had to tell the truth. The girl was mad and she wanted me to take her home for lying to her. I sure learned my lesson.”
Briant Denenberg, 18,

“All she wanted to do was talk.”
Wayne Samuel, 16,

“It was really boring because the guy wouldn’t stop talking about himself.”
Nicole Dwork, 17,

“The absolute worst and most gross date would have to be when this guy that I only liked as (a friend), took me to the beach at night and just so happened to have a blanket in his car. We pretty much just sat and talked until he started getting gross and telling me that my voice was really turning him on. Yuck! I almost puked in the entire ocean.”
Moonie Park, 17,
senior, Ocean View
“My worst date was when my friend set me up with a blind date and she took me dancing. She ended up falling down and spraining her ankle. She made me take her to the hospital and made me pay the doctor bill.”
Ricky Brower, 16,

“I was 14 and it was my first boyfriend. I thought he was very cool when he told me he was 21, but later I found out he was 24. I had to sneak out of the house to go out with him, and when I was caught I was in big trouble. In fact, I’m still paying for it. My mother still has a problem with guys with long hair.”
Ravi Lay, 16,
junior, University
“I went to a boat party with this guy and his friends. First of all, I didn’t know anyone but my date. The party was OK, but the ride home was terrible. We rode in the back of a mini-truck with no cab on the back. We had to lay down because we could get pulled over. Then it started to sprinkle. I was freezing. I got a big bruise on my hip, too. Other than that it was great.”
Jennifer Harkness, 15,

“He picked me up to go to a carnival, and when we got there, the carnival wasn’t there. We decided to get something to eat and then ran out of gas.”

“When my boyfriend and I set up my best friend and his best friend, and we doubled. They seemed to like each other at first, but by the end of the night, they were acting like the other wasn’t there. My boyfriend and I ended up taking sides, and we got in a fight. We were home by 10 o’clock, and I had to listen to my friend complaining forever. I will never set anyone up again.”
Jean Morgan, 17,

“My worst date would have to have been going bowling with his family. Of course, I refused to bowl, but all he did was show off. He just hung all over me and treated me like I was a queen. It bothered me, so I said hasta.”
Lori Licht, 16,
junior, Cypress
“On the way to the co-ed (dance), the couple my date and I were with was involved in a huge car accident. We were stuck at the hospital for three hours. We hadn’t eaten and I was starving. We had to go straight to the dance because some of the co-ed nominees were with us. On the way home, the axle in my car ended up breaking. We had to call for a ride at 3 in the morning.”
Todd Sargent, 17,

“The guy I’ve been seeing lately, Travis, and I went to the movies on New Year’s Eve. The movie wasn’t supposed to end till 12:25, so I had to spend New Year’s Eve in a theater. If that wasn’t bad enough, Travis and his friend counted down to the new year inside the theater really loud and yelled, ‘Happy New Year!’ Nobody else in the theater did anything.”
Judi Profant, 17,
