NATION : Matsunaga Battling Cancer
WASHINGTON — Sen. Spark M. Matsunaga (D-Hawaii) disclosed today that he is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.
“I can’t conclude at this juncture that this condition is debilitating to the extent that I should step down,” Matsunaga, 73, said in a statement. But “if it appears that my attendance in the second session of the 101st Congress does not show marked improvement over the record of the first session, I will reassess my present intention of fulfilling my term of office,” he said.
Matsunaga, whose third term expires in 1994, had a “string of illnesses” last year that caused him to miss roll call votes, said spokesman Ed Greaney. Among those problems were shingles, a broken leg and, most recently, a broken right arm.
