SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : Christian Heritage Improves to 15-4
Christian Heritage held Azusa Pacific scoreless for five minutes 52 seconds in the final 6:19 Thursday to lock up a 75-69 men’s basketball victory at Azusa Pacific.
Christian Heritage, the No. 1-ranked team in the National Christian College Athletic Assn., improved to 15-4 while tying a school record for the fourth time with its sixth consecutive victory. The Hawks have won 12 of their past 13 games.
Christian Heritage took a 21-4 lead 5:27 into the game, but Azusa Pacific fought back to take a 65-64 lead on Ed Miller’s jump shot with 6:19 to play. The Hawks then went on the 11-0 run that put the game away.
Brad Soucie scored 29 for Christian Heritage, and Rundy Foster added 17. Mark Kraatz turned his right ankle early in the first half and is questionable for Saturday’s homecoming game against The Masters.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The University of San Diego suffered its fourth consecutive defeat, losing to visiting St. Mary’s, 59-57, in overtime in a West Coast Conference game. The score was 52-52 after regulation, and the Toreras had a chance to tie it again with six seconds left in overtime but failed to score. Chris Enger and Lynda Jones each scored 12 points for USD (10-6, 0-3). Cheree Tappin scored 28 for St. Mary’s (12-5, 5-0).
Julie Szukalski scored 24 points in Pacific’s 68-64 Big West Conference victory over visiting San Diego State (2-14, 1-4). SDSU led, 30-28, at halftime. Julie Evans scored 28 points and Lori Lollis 15 for SDSU. Pacific improved to 7-7, 2-4.
WOMEN’S GOLF
San Diego State was fourth (322) and U.S. International seventh (332) after the first round of the Yamaha Holiday Classic at Carlton Oaks Country Club. Arizona State was leading with 312.
Four golfers lead the individual competition at 75--Brandie Burton of Arizona State (a three-time winner at the Optimist Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines), Amy Fruwirth of Arizona State, Tracy Nakamura of Southern California and Jean Zedlitz of UCLA. San Diego State’s Joann Walker and Jennifer Holt are at 77 and 78. Kim Millies of USIU had 80.
