COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Michigan Nearly Throws One Away

Michigan had trouble holding onto the ball Thursday night, but the sixth-ranked Wolverines held on long enough to defeat Ohio State, 90-88, in a Big Ten Conference game at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Demetrius Calip scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half as Michigan, despite 17 turnovers, won for the third time in six days.

“Calip did a great job for us,” Coach Steve Fisher said. “He provided us a spark, both physically and emotionally, when we needed it.”

Michigan (13-2 overall, 3-1 in conference play) shot 44%. Ohio State (8-6, 3-2), shot 47%.

The Buckeyes were led by Perry Carter with 29 points, 21 in the second half.

Michigan led, 47-46, at halftime, but Ohio State freshman Jimmy Jackson scored seven of his 18 points as the Buckeyes opened the second half with an 18-10 run to take a 64-57 lead with 14:22 left.

Calip’s basket tied it, 68-68, with 9:47 left and a three-point basket by Sean Higgins completed a 7-0 run that put Michigan ahead, 71-68, with 9:25 remaining.

No. 1 Kansas 132, Elizabeth City State 65--The Jayhawks raced to an 18-0 lead against their Division II opponents in a nonconference game at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas (19-0) was led by Tony Brown’s 19 points.

Rick Calloway scored 18, Mark Randall 16 and Kirk Wagner 14 for Kansas. Power forward Alonzo Jamison, declared eligible earlier in the day after a three-semester layoff, had nine.

No. 7 Illinois 74, Michigan State 63--Marcus Liberty scored 26 points for the Illini in a Big Ten game at Champaign, Ill.

Illinois (13-2, 3-2) led, 34-21, at halftime, and 49-33 with 13 minutes left. But the Spartans (14-3, 3-1) went on a 21-8 run to cut the deficit to three points with seven minutes remaining.

Liberty then made two free throws and Andy Kaufmann added a basket and free throw to pace the 14-2 spurt that put Illinois ahead, 71-56, with a minute left.

No. 10 Louisville 109, Tulane 96--LaBradford Smith scored seven points in less than three minutes, leading an early 9-2 surge to pace the Cardinals in a Metro Conference game at New Orleans.

Louisville (13-2, 3-1) led, 31-20, midway through the first half and 65-43 on a basket by Cornelius Holden four minutes into the second half.

No. 14 Indiana 83, Iowa 79--Eric Anderson scored 18 points, including two free throws that put the Hoosiers ahead to stay, in a Big Ten game at Iowa City, Iowa.

Indiana (13-2, 3-2) rallied from a 41-36 halftime deficit to win for the first time in six games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The loss was Iowa’s fifth in a row.

Iowa (8-6, 0-4) is off to its worst Big Ten start since 1932.

No. 19 North Carolina State 61, Wake Forest 57--Rodney Monroe scored 23 points for the Wolfpack in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Winston-Salem, N.C.

North Carolina State is 13-3 and 2-1; Wake Forest is 7-8 and 0-4.

Evansville 59, No. 20 Xavier 51--Chris Mack, Brian Hill and Larry Brand combined for 52 points for the Aces in a Midwestern Collegiate Conference game at Evansville, Ind.

Mack, who scored 20 points, made eight of 12 free throws and Hill, who scored 17 points, made five of six. Mack also had 11 rebounds. Brand scored 15 points.

Evansville is 10-7 and 3-0; Xavier 12-2 and 2-1.

No. 22 Minnesota 97, Northwestern 75--Willie Burton scored 19 points for the Gophers in a Big Ten game at Minneapolis.

Minnesota is 11-3 and 2-2; Northwestern is 7-7 and 0-4.
