Perkin-Elmer in New Talks to Sell Unit: According to industry sources, Perkin-Elmer is negotiating to sell its semiconductor equipment unit to Silicon Valley Group, a small equipment manufacturer that apparently has won backing from IBM for the deal. The unidentified sources said IBM is supporting the purchase because it wants Perkin-Elmer’s unit to remain in U.S. ownership.
