Cipher Data Products: The San Diego-based manufacturer of computer tape drives, a kind of backup data storage device, reported a loss of $12 million on sales of $41.5 million for the second quarter ended Dec. 31, contrasted with a $3.2 million profit on sales of $53.8 million for the similar quarter a year ago. Cipher Data had previously announced that it expected to report losses of this magnitude. For the fiscal year to date, Cipher’s losses stand at $26.1 million on revenue of $82.8 million, contrasted with a $7-million profit on sales of $105.9 million for the same six months the previous year.
