WORLD : Poland Saves Gdansk Shipyard
GDANSK, Poland — Poland’s Solidarity government today appointed a new manager for the Gdansk shipyard where the Solidarity movement was born, reversing a decision by the ousted Communist government to close it.
The announcement, made in the conference hall of the shipyard where Solidarity was formed in 1980, followed a news conference with Solidarity leader Lech Walesa attended by about 300 workers and a group of reporters.
Zbigniew Lis, Solidarity chief in the shipyard, told the applauding workers the government appointed Hans Szyc as manager of the shipyard, which will remain a state-owned enterprise but will be open to foreign investment as well as investment by workers.
