OOPS! : Motorman Forgets F’s and Q’s
NEW YORK — Two thousand subway passengers, used to nothing more surprising than an occasional kazoo-playing panhandler, found themselves headed for the wrong part of town when a novice motorman hit the wrong button, transit officials said today.
The train to Jamaica became a train to Long Island City--those are two sections of the sprawling borough of Queens--during the height of the rush hour Tuesday evening.
It happened when the unidentified motorman punched the wrong “route request” button at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, switching his train off the F line and onto the Q line. Both lines head toward Queens, but by different routes.
“It’s like getting off on the wrong exit on the Long Island Expressway,” said Robert Previdi, a Transit Authority spokesman.
