WORLD IN BRIEF : PAPUA NEW GUINEA : Rebels Kill British Tire Firm Executive

Militant secessionists killed a British businessman on Bougainville island in Papua New Guinea. Australia, which formerly administered the island, advised its citizens there to leave as soon as possible. Police said Mike Wardley, 40, local manager for the Bridgestone Tire Co., was shot to death at the Bougainville Copper Ltd. mine at Panguna. Police could not say what Wardley was doing at the mine or why he might have been targeted.
