From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The religious beliefs of Hmong tribesmen from Laos led to the exhumation of St. Paul, Minn., Head Start teacher Charlotte Bell. Bell had been buried in early January with a get-well card that included photos of her 36 students, most of whom are Hmong. But the Hmong believe that burying a person’s picture causes that person’s spirit to leave his or her body. Hmong parents felt their children had been cursed and demanded that the pictures be retrieved.
