Karl Dorrell, who helped lead Helix High School to the 1980 San Diego Section 3-A championship, has been named an assistant coach at Northern Arizona. Dorrell also played at UCLA and for the Dallas Cowboys in 1987.
Dorrell, whose responsibilities will be assigned later, is the eighth assistant named by Steve Axman, who was hired Dec. 1.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
UC San Diego broke into the NCAA Division III top 20 for the first time. The Tritons (14-4) are ranked No. 19.
Claremont-Mudd, ranked No. 15, is the only other California team ranked in Division III. UCSD defeated Claremont-Mudd by 14 points earlier this season.
MEN’S TENNIS
Jose Luis Noriega, a sophomore at the University of San Diego, won the 72nd Annual Peruvian Open National Tennis title with a 7-6, 7-6, 6-1 victory over Sergio Cortes of Chile Sunday. Noriega, 20, is ranked No. 2 in the nation among NCAA Division I players, and the Toreros are ranked No. 17 as a team.
USD opens its season at home with a match Friday at 1 p.m. against UC Riverside.
Unseeded Cynthia MacGregor, a former No. 1 player at San Diego State, and sister Cammy lost to top-seeded Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles at the Australian Open.
