Santa Monica : $1 Movies for Children
Remember the good old days when a Saturday matinee cost only a buck?
Well, those days are back, at least for one weekly movie screening starting Saturday at the Mann Theatre, 1314 Wilshire Blvd.
Through the efforts of Councilman William Jennings, children 12 and younger will be admitted for $1 to an 11 a.m. screening of “Karate Kid III.” Adults accompanied by children also will be admitted for $1.
Jennings originally sought to have the City Council appropriate $2,000 to pay for two months of the Saturday screenings, but after his proposal was bumped off the agenda for three weeks, he obtained the funds from private contributions. The Santa Monica PTA Council and the Santa Monica Police Activities League will coordinate the screenings.
The City Council Tuesday directed city staff to report back with a recommendation on whether to fund future screenings.
Among the movies scheduled are “Mac and Me,” “Ghostbusters II” and “Short Circuit II.” All are rated PG, as will all future films in the $1 movie matinee series.
Mann Theatres also will offer a reduced price for popcorn and soft drinks.
