THE SIDELINES : U.S. Yacht Sinks Off Brazil Coast
BUENOS AIRES — A U.S. yacht sank off the Brazilian coast after running aground during an international race early today, race organizers said.
The Congere, with a crew of 25, had been leading the race from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro when it ran aground. The crew was rescued by an Argentine navy corvette and no one was hurt, Argentine Yacht Club press officer Eduardo Perinben said.
The 82-foot, $3-million ocean racer ran aground about 50 yards off the coast after breaking its mast in 50-knot winds just north of the Brazil-Uruguay border, he added.
