Last Holdover From Shanahan Regime Leaves Raiders and Joins Chargers
Alex Gibbs, the Raiders’ last holdover from the Mike Shanahan regime, was named offensive line coach for the San Diego Chargers, Coach Dan Henning said Thursday.
Gibbs, who replaces Larry Beightol, spent four seasons as offensive line coach of the Denver Broncos (1984-87) before joining Shanahan with the Raiders.
In 1989, the Raiders ranked eighth in the NFL with an average of 5.5 yards per offensive play. The Raider rushing game averaged 4.5 yards a carry, which was third overall.
Gibbs, 48, coached 13 years collegiately. He served as the offensive line coach at the University of Georgia in 1982 and ‘83, offensive coordinator at Auburn (79-81) and offensive coordinator and line coach at Ohio State (75-78). He also coached at West Virginia, Kentucky and Duke.
The Chargers also announced that Jack Reilly, who developed one of the nation’s most potent passing attacks as an assistant at the University of Utah, was hired as an assistant coach.
