USD’s Noriega Loses in National Indoor

Jose Luis Noriega, a University of San Diego sophomore, lost a three-set match to Todd Martin of Northwestern Saturday in the semifinals of the Rolex National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Minneapolis.

Noriega, the second-seeded player in the third leg of the college tennis grand slam, lost, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, to No. 4 Martin.

Noriega, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA, was competing in his first indoor tournament. In November, he won the National Clay Court Championships, the second grand slam event.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chris Enger had 19 points and pulled down a West Coast Conference and school record 24 rebounds as the University of San Diego routed Portland, 80-62, at the USD Sports Center.

Enger, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Vista High, bettered by two both the conference rebound mark set by Pepperdine’s Mary Formico in 1985 and the school record set by Martha Nelson in the 1981-82 season.

Enger also had six blocked shots, extending the WCC season record she set Thursday. She now has 81.

Candida Echeverria and Lynda Jones added 13 points each for USD, which won its third in a row. The Toreras are 15-8, 5-5. Bridget Smith led Portland (8-14, 4-6) with 23 points.

Colorado College, ranked 16th in Division III, defeated UC San Diego, 79-68, in a nonconference game at Triton Gym. Cari Young paced the Tritons with 19 points and nine rebounds. Pam Wilson (20 points) and Sally Bush (14 points, nine rebounds) led Colorado College (15-5). UCSD dropped to 12-9.

Point Loma Nazarene lost, 68-65, to Fresno Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference game in Golden Gym. Camille Armijo had 24 points and seven assists for the Crusaders (13-11, 2-5). Diane Weststeyn scored 23 for Fresno Pacific (12-11, 5-2).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC San Diego overwhelmed UC Santa Cruz, 114-71, in a nonconference game at Santa Cruz. For the Tritons, Tim Rapp scored a game-high 31 points. Teammates Gordon McNeil and Rick Batt contributed 24 and 22 points. UCSD improved to 18-5.

Christian Heritage defeated Azusa Pacific, 81-69, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Grossmont College. The victory ended the Hawks’ home season record at 11-0. Christian Heritage has won 28 of 30 home games in the past 2 1/2 years.

The Hawks improved to 23-5. Azusa Pacific fell to 15-11. Brad Soucie led the winners with 16.

Fresno Pacific defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 79-63, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Golden Gym. It was the Crusaders ninth consecutive loss. Fresno Pacific’s Donnie Johnson scored 27. John Greer led PLNC (6-19, 0-8) with 12. Fresno Pacific is 17-9, 6-2.

BASEBALL

Erik Plantenberg (1-0) struck out 12 as San Diego State defeated Pacific, 4-0, in a nonconference game at Smith Field. Brian Grebeck’s seventh-inning, bases-empty home run was his first of the season. Teammate Jeff Berry stole three bases and scored two runs, and Jason Ledford was three for three with two RBIs. SDSU is 4-1; Pacific is 1-4.

The University of San Diego scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth in the first game and was leading in the second before it was called because of darkness in a scheduled West Coast Conference doubleheader against St. Mary’s at Cunningham Stadium.

The Toreros won the first game, 7-6, on a one-out, base-loaded single by freshman Tony Moeder that scored Jim Keen. Rick Doane’s single to right drove in the first run of the inning.

Tom Cheek (1-0) was the winner, allowing one run on two hits over the final 3 2/3 innings. USD improved to 3-1, 1-1. St. Mary’s is 2-4, 1-1.

USD was leading the second game, 4-2, before it was called in the fourth. It will be replayed in its entirety today at 1 p.m. at USD.

U.S. International split a nonconference doubleheader with Grand Canyon College in Arizona. The Gulls lost the first game, 4-2, allowing two unearned runs. Arnie Spiker (0-2) took the loss. Steve Phoenix (2-1) went the distance for Grand Canyon (5-6).

USIU (3-4) rallied for three runs in the last inning to win the second game, 5-2. Beto Rodriguez had the big hit, a two-run single. Kyle Sebach (1-0) was the winner, allowing no hits in his two innings of relief of starter Mike Whisonant.

Winning pitcher Kevin Hazlett and reliever Chris Gunnett allowed just three hits as Point Loma Nazarene defeated Pomona Pitzer, 4-1, in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader in Pomona.

The Crusaders (1-2-1) stranded 10 runners and lost the second game, 7-0.

SOFTBALL

USIU dropped the first game of a nonconference doubleheader against visiting Arizona, 1-0, but won the second, 4-1. USIU (2-2) had six hits in the second game. Arizona dropped to 1-1. For the Gulls, Nora Flores (0-2) was charged with the first-game loss but picked up her second save of the year in the second.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego shut out Long Beach State, 9-0, in a nonconference match in Long Beach. Sakolwan Kacheroen defeated Jenny Smith, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 1 singles.

In No. 1 doubles, Tonya Fuller and Paula Hansen defeated Smith and Katherine Newcomb, 6-0, 6-1. USD is 2-1. Long Beach fell to 0-5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine defeated UC San Diego, 2-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-12. Nate Brown had 12 kills and 11 digs for UCSD (0-7). Steve Florentine had 19 kills and eight digs, and Scott Recknor 16 kills and 10 digs for host UC Irvine (1-6).
