UCSD Men Gain First Two Tennis Victories
After an 0-3 start against Division I teams, the UC San Diego men’s tennis team recorded consecutive victories against Division II Cal State Bakersfield and Division III Cal State San Bernardino Sunday at home. UCSD defeated CSUSB, 7-2. A later match against Air Force was delayed by rain. It will resume Wednesday.
The Tritons swept singles competition, 6-0, had to forfeit at No. 1 doubles, then split the remaining two doubles matches. Winning in the top three singles positions were Francois Monnar, Chris Belloli and Steve Stukovsky.
RUGBY
Defending tournament champion Old Mission Beach Athletic Club lost to Belmont Shore, 18-15, in the championship game of the OMBAC tournament at Robb Field in Ocean Beach.
That was the second time OMBAC lost to Belmont Shore this season.
Cal State Long Beach defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 33-3, in the college division.
CYCLING
UC Santa Barbara edged San Diego State in team scoring at the SDSU Classic over the weekend. In Sunday’s Criterium, Trevor Thorpe of UCSB won the mens’ A race (50 laps, 30 miles) and SDSU’s Bob Noones took second. SDSU’s Stephanie Lucero won the womens’ A race (29 laps, 20 miles).
BADMINTON
Asok Boopathy defeated Tom Reidy, 5-15, 15-10, 15-13, in the mens’ A singles finals of the Dave Freeman Open at Balboa Park. Liz Aronohn defeated Denise Jones, 11-2, 11-5, in the womens’ A singles. All four players are members of the Arizona State badminton team.
