CORONA DEL MAR : Swim Center Due to Open in March
A $1.5-million aquatic center will open next month at Corona del Mar High School.
The effort to build the facility was spearheaded by the Swim for the Gold Committee, a private group that, over a 1 1/2-year period, raised the money to build it.
The center includes an Olympic-size swimming pool, lockers for boys and girls, a weight room and offices. It is the first facility to be built in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District through a cooperative effort by parents, residents, the city, school officials and the business community.
The pool will be available for high school aquatic activities, city swimming programs and to the public at large.
The center will open, however, without pool lane lines and starting blocks, and without bleachers or a scoreboard, said Ralph Rodheim, Swim for the Gold Committee chairman.
Rodheim said the committee will continue its fund-raising efforts to come up with another $100,000 to pay for these items.
The center will be officially dedicated in April.
