Long Summer Practice Helped Her it the Mark
Extra practice over the summer certainly paid off for Grossmont junior Christina Adams.
After averaging 15 points a game as a sophomore last year, Adams shot baskets for two hours each day over the summer. Her coach, Frank Foggiana, estimates she took more than 30,000 shots.
Adams, whose season ended last Thursday when Grossmont lost to San Pasqual, 74-48, in the Division II quarterfinals, finished with a 38.3 average and broke the section record of 36.7 set in 1987 by Point Loma’s Terry Mann.
Including two playoff games, Adams finished with 766 points. The second leading scorer was Christina Murguia of Castle Park with 644 in 22 games for a 29.3 average during the regular season.
Adams, who was 107 of 203 (52.7%) from the field, had a game high 52 points ranking her fourth in the section record book. Mann holds the section record with a 65-point game in 1986.
Earlier, Adams had broken the record of 44 three-pointers made in a season set by Mountain Empire’s Alison Peckham in 1989. Adams’ 100 three-pointers more than doubled the record.
Adams also made 254 free throws to surpass the section record of 253 set by Susie O’Brien of San Marcos last year.
In the 2-A boys first round soccer game between Kearny and Carlsbad last Wednesday, an official’s error cost Carlsbad the game. However, after Carlsbad protested, the San Diego Section Coordinating Council Committee ruled in its favor.
“There was a misapplication of the tie-breaking procedure by the officials,” said Jan Jessop, Section Assistant Commissioner.
After a scoreless regulation game, Carlsbad scored in the first 15-minute overtime. According to the sudden death rule implemented this year, the game was over and Carlsbad was the winner. But Carlsbad’s celebration ended when the officials let the game continue. Kearny tied the game, 1-1, and eventually won (or assumed it had won) in penalty kicks.
Thus, third-seeded Carlsbad (15-5-4) defeated Madison Saturday, 1-0, to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal game against second-seeded San Diego.
Christian’s Tony Clark has just about broken every section scoring record this season and could possibly break a few more records depending on how far Christian advances in the basketball Division V playoffs. Third-seeded Christian (15-11) will play second-seeded Bishop’s in the semifinals Wednesday.
In Christian’s 103-66 quarterfinal victory over La Jolla Country Day Saturday, Clark scored 64 points to break the section single-game scoring record set by Michell Lilly of Madison in 1976.
If Clark continues to average 44.7 points a game, he will break the state single-season scoring average record of 44.3 set by Glendora’s Tracy Murray last year. Clark has scored 1,118 points in 25 games.
The 6-10 Murray, who led the nation with that average last year, now plays for UCLA. He also set a state mark of 1,505 points.
The section scoring average in a season is 31.9 set by Lilly in 1977.
Section records broken by Clark this season--most points in a career, most points in a season, most points in a game, best scoring average in a season.
Baseball season begins Saturday for teams involved in the Madison Warhawk Tournament. The tournament, which is divided into a Blue Division and a Gray Division, will host 18 local teams. The finals will be played at San Diego State on March 15.
