164 Die in Rio During Carnival

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — At least 164 people died in this city-- 72 of them homicides -- during the five nights of Carnival, which ended at noon Wednesday, but police called this year’s pre-Lent festival the most peaceful in a decade.
Police blamed the deaths on assaults, traffic accidents and drunken brawls during revelry that marks the final days of permissiveness before Christians begin the 40-day season of Lent.
