WORLD : Thatcher Fares Poorly in Poll
LONDON — The political fortunes of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher plunged further today with the release of an opinion poll showing her Conservative Party 18.5% behind the opposition Labor Party, its lowest standing in 19 years.
The survey undertaken by Gallup for the Daily Telegraph newspaper indicated that Thatcher’s slide is due to a controversial new tax and her refusal to lower interest rates to spur economic growth. It showed 65% of people are dissatisfied with Thatcher as prime minister.
The poll put the Labor Party of Neil Kinnock at 49.5%, a rise of 1.5% from two previous polls.
It placed the Conservatives at 31%, their lowest standing since September, 1971.
The centrist Liberal Democrats have 7%, the environmentalist Green party 5.5% and others 7%.
