ROUNDUP : San Fernando Subdues Poly, Wins Tournament
Senior left-hander Hector De La Cruz pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to lift San Fernando High to the title in its round-robin tournament with a 7-2 victory over Poly at San Fernando on Thursday.
De La Cruz (1-0), in his first extended action since pulling a muscle in his left arm during the off-season, struck out four and walked three.
“It was his first real action to speak of,” San Fernando Coach Steve Marden said. “For as much as he’s thrown recently, I was impressed.”
San Fernando led, 3-0, with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth inning when sophomore right-hander Rick Savala relieved De La Cruz.
Savala promptly picked a runner off third. After a batter was safe on an infield error to reload the bases, Savala retired Poly cleanup hitter Gabe Chavez on a ground ball for the third out.
Richard Sanchez had two hits and drove in two runs for San Fernando (3-0-1). Poly senior right-hander David Giatti (0-1) allowed seven runs on six hits over five innings, striking out one. Rodrigo Dorame had two hits for Poly (2-2).
In other San Fernando tournament games:
Granada Hills 7, Franklin 3--Senior right-hander Gabe Miller pitched a six-hitter, striking out five and walking two to lead Granada Hills at home.
Miller also was one for three with two runs batted in for Granada Hills (1-3). Outfielder Bryan Martin was three for four with two runs scored.
Pinch-hitter Eric Anderson drove in two runs with a fifth-inning single to spark a three-run rally that gave the Highlanders a 4-2 lead. Franklin is 2-2.
Birmingham 21, Grant 2--Danny Larsen went four for four with two doubles, scored three runs and had three RBIs at Birmingham.
Birmingham starter Josh Brown (1-0) went the distance, allowing six hits and recording seven strikeouts. Justin Bass added a pair of doubles for Birmingham (2-1-1). Grant is 1-3.
GIRLS’ SOFTBALL
North Hollywood 9, Verdugo Hills 0--Senior right-hander Jennifer Rothstein threw a four-hitter, struck out 12 and walked one in a nonleague game at North Hollywood. Lynn Lampert and Kristyn Frady were two for five for North Hollywood (1-0).
Chatsworth 8, Monroe 4--Mara Phillips hit a grand slam to cap a five-run fifth inning in a nonleague opener at Chatsworth. Laura Roopenian pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts for Chatsworth.
Birmingham 25, Roosevelt 5--Christina Cavallero hit three home runs and Annie Simon hit one for Birmingham (1-0) in a nonleague game at Roosevelt.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Reseda d. Marshall, 15-17, 12-15, 15-7, 15-10, 15-9--Scott Kent and Shad Dockery had 22 and 20 kills for host Reseda in a nonleague opener.
Campbell Hall d. Murphy, 15-2, 15-6, 15-6--Don White led Campbell Hall with 13 kills in the nonleague opener at home.
Newbury Park d. Antelope Valley, 15-9, 15-5, 15-10--Brian Hanmer had 14 kills for host Newbury Park (2-0) in a nonleague game.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Santa Monica 6, Pierce 3--Santa Monica scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning off Pierce right-hander Chris Murphy to lead the Corsairs to a 6-3 win in a Western State Conference opener.
Murphy (2-3) allowed seven hits in 9 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking five at Pierce.
Outfielder Joe Cascione, a graduate of St. Genevieve High, had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Cascione has had two or more hits in his last four games for Pierce (7-7, 0-1).
Canyons 18, Santa Barbara 9--Steve Kovacic was four for four with three doubles, scored three runs and had two RBIs in a WSC opener at Canyons.
Gary Morgan had three hits and Ron Robart, Chris Vasquez and Jon Beauchemin added two each for Canyons (9-5, 1-0). Freshman right-hander Roland De La Maza (3-1) allowed eight hits in six innings, striking out five.
The Master’s 13, Southern California College 6--Craig Johnson was two for two with two RBIs and Andy Martin was three for four with three RBIs for The Master’s (4-8).
Right-hander Rick Simpson (1-3) struck out two in six innings to earn the nonconference win at The Master’s.
WOMEN’S SOFTBALL
Cal Lutheran 4-5, Cal State Dominguez Hills 0-5--DeeAndra Pilkington pitched a five-hitter with one strikeout in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.
The second game was called after six innings because of darkness.
Brenda Lee hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the second game for the Regals (4-1-1).
