India to Pay Interim Relief to Gas Victims: The Indian government said it would pay interim compensation for three years of $12 a month to each of 500,000 people living near the site of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster. The leak of toxic gas from the pesticide plant operated by Union Carbide Corp. in December, 1984, killed at least 2,000 people and injured thousands more.
