HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Blyleven Outshines Moffat, 1-0

Andy Moffat of Newbury Park High pitched a three-hitter but was outdueled by Todd Blyleven, the son of Angel pitcher Bert Blyleven, in Villa Park’s 1-0 victory in the consolation championship game of the Loara tournament Saturday at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

Blyleven, a senior right-hander, allowed one hit and one walk. Moffat struck out eight and walked two.

In other baseball games:

Oak Park 14, Campbell Hall 3--Jason Kane was five for five with three doubles, a home run and five runs batted in to lead Oak Park (1-1) in a first-round game of the Highland Hall tournament at Oak Park.

Oak Park had 15 hits and scored seven runs in the sixth inning. Two Oak Park pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. Starter and winner Eric Pryor struck out nine, and Jeff Gibbons struck out all six batters he faced.

Saugus 4, Banning 2--Josh Nolan singled in the winning run for Saugus in the fourth inning of an El Segundo tournament game.

Doug Maggiora (2-1) earned the victory in relief of starter Dave Weeg.

Crespi 7, Garr 6--Crespi strung together five consecutive singles with one out in the seventh to rally for three runs and make a winner of sophomore Charles Aghajanian, who pitched his first varsity inning in the top of the inning.

Crespi (3-1-1) earned fifth place in the El Segundo tournament with the victory at Pierce College.

Kevin Walsh knocked in Scott Barton with the winning run.

St. Francis 13-1, La Canada 1-10--Manny Fernandez (2-0) had 11 strikeouts and Matt Jones cracked a three-run home run for St. Francis in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader at La Canada.

In the second game, Mitch Bowen had two doubles for St. Francis (3-1), but La Canada (1-4) limited St. Francis to four hits.

St. Genevieve 5, Verbum Dei 0--Carlos Concha (2-0), a right-handed junior, allowed three hits and struck out four in the first round of the Highland Hall tournament. It was the Valiants’ first game at their new facility, North Valley field.

Village Christian 20, Paraclete 16--Paul Gatlin, Matt Bates, Panos Panay and Thor Martin each doubled for the Crusaders (4-0), who scored 10 runs in the third inning of a nonleague game at Paraclete.

SOFTBALL

Buena 6, Simi Valley 1--Winning pitcher Kim Maher (4-1) drove in a run and went the distance for Buena (4-1) in the Simi Valley tournament championship game.
