HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Saugus Edges Past Palmdale Into 1st Place
Junior right-hander Doug Maggiora scattered eight hits over seven innings and Saugus High pushed across a run in the top of the seventh to edge Palmdale, 3-2, in a Golden League game on Friday.
Maggiora (5-1) outpitched Chris Tampoya (3-1), who allowed two earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Maggiora, the winning pitcher in relief in Saugus’ 3-2 league victory over Antelope Valley on Tuesday, struck out four and walked none against Palmdale (6-2, 2-1 in league play).
Saugus (6-2-1, 3-0), which took over sole possession of first place, scored in the seventh when junior second baseman Josh Nolan (two for three) led off with a single.
Nolan took second on a passed ball, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Worley and scored on a sacrifice fly to left-center by Chris Hernandez.

Simi Valley 7, Newbury Park 6--Two Newbury Park errors enabled the Pioneers to score four runs--including the game winner--in the sixth inning of a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.
With one out, the bases loaded and the Panthers leading, 6-3, Simi Valley’s Kenny Hood drove in two runs with a single to right. Newbury Park outfielder Ron Spaeth’s throw home was wild and Brian Vasey came home to tie the score, 6-6.
After catching up with Spaeth’s wild throw, catcher Jon Jerotz overthrew relief pitcher Andy Moffat, who was covering home. Hood scored the deciding run when Jerotz’s throw rolled under a fence by first base.
Simi Valley is 5-4, 2-1. Newbury Park is 5-5-1, 0-2.
Royal 4, Camarillo 2--Richard Naranjo slugged a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and propel host Royal to its first Marmonte League win. Naranjo finished three for four.
Jim Tosh (2-0) relieved starter Will Egan in the sixth inning and pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless ball to get the win.
Robert Campos added two hits for Royal (5-3, 1-2).
The loss was the third in the past four games for Camarillo (6-4, 0-2).
St. Francis 13, Loyola 2--Manny Fernandez (3-0) threw a four-hitter and struck out 11 to lead visiting St. Francis to a Del Rey League win at Loyola.
Albert Ojeda added a three-run homer and Mitch Bowen had two hits and three RBIs for St. Francis (4-4, 1-2).
Antelope Valley 5, Quartz Hill 3--Robert Lehman and Kevin Branch (2-1) combined on a one-hitter to lead Antelope Valley in a Golden League game at home.
Quartz Hill’s lone hit was an infield single in the fourth off Lehman, who walked five and struck out two in 3 1/3 innings. Branch pitched the final 3 2/3, walking two with no strikeouts.
Jade Freeman was two for four with a double for Antelope Valley (2-6, 1-2).
Canyon 6, Ridgecrest Burroughs 0--Senior right-hander Scott Thomason notched his fourth victory with a shutout at Burroughs in a Golden League game.
Thomason (4-1) scattered five singles, struck out four and walked none. Roy Bjorklund, Steve Mann and Oscar Silva all had two hits for Canyon (5-3, 2-1).
Burroughs is 5-3, 0-3.
Hueneme 6, Oxnard 4--Ray Franco had a two-run triple and Chris Baker had a two-run single to lead Hueneme (5-3-1, 2-0-1) to a Channel League win at Oxnard. The game was called in the fifth inning because of darkness.
Baker went two for three with two RBIs and one run scored.
Buena 2, Ventura 2--The Channel League game at Ventura was stopped after nine innings because of darkness.
Ventura tied the score, 2-2, in the fifth when Steve Garrett scored Jeff Bargsten with a hit-and-run single. Garrett also had an RBI double in the first.
For Buena (5-4-1, 1-1-1), Ryan Webster drove in a run in the second, and Oz Lara had an RBI single in the third.
Alhambra 5, Burroughs 4--John Duarte single-handedly demolished Burroughs in a Foothill League game at Alhambra.
Duarte was four for four with a single, two doubles, a triple and four RBIs for Alhambra (5-4, 2-1).
Sophomore right-hander Scott Minkler (0-1), making his first start for Burroughs after a promotion from the junior varsity, had two hits and two RBIs, but was tagged with the loss.
Eddie Gavilan was two for three and Jason LaPorte had a two-run single for Burroughs (1-8, 0-3).
Moorpark 7, Bishop Diego 2--Robert Hernandez struck out 13 in a complete-game win for Moorpark in a Tri-Valley League game at home. Hernandez (2-2) limited Bishop Diego to three singles and walked five.
Mike Granderson led Moorpark (3-4, 2-1) with two hits and three RBIs. Jake Flesher added two hits, an RBI and a double, and Hernandez also doubled.
Fillmore 4, St. Bonaventure 0--Junior right-hander Anthony Chessani (2-1) fired a one-hitter, striking out 11, to lead visiting Fillmore (6-2, 2-1) to a Tri-Valley League win. Fillmore’s Ramiro Moreno had two hits.
Oak Park 7, Carpinteria 0--Sophomore Eric Pryor struck out six and scattered four hits in a Tri-Valley League game at Carpinteria.
Erikk Cass was three for four with three RBIs and scored once for the Eagles (4-4, 2-1).
Pasadena 11, Hoover 5--Pasadena hit three home runs in a seven-run fourth in a Pacific League game against visiting Hoover (4-4, 1-2).
La Salle 9, Village Christian 3--Junior right-hander Matt Smay lost his first game in three decisions despite allowing only three hits in five innings in a nonleague game at La Salle.
Smay walked eight and allowed six runs. He also went three for four for the Crusaders (7-1).
Queen of Angels 9, Oakwood 1--Danny Herold tossed a three-hitter and Eric Montijo had two triples and two RBIs to lead Queen of Angels (2-2, 2-0) to a Liberty League win.
Paraclete 9, Brentwood 4--Andre Matalon went two for four, knocked in three runs and scored two to lead host Paraclete to a nonleague win.
Paraclete’s Tim Salado (2-2) threw a complete-game six-hitter with eight strikeouts.
L.A. Lutheran 18, Coast Christian 3--Senior right-hander Chad Phillips (3-0) threw a two-hitter and struck out 13 to lead host L.A. Lutheran to the win in a Heritage League game shortened to 5 1/2 innings because of darkness.
Darren Brown, who had a streak of 10 consecutive hits broken in the game, hit for the cycle and had five RBIs.
Highland Hall 9, Antelope Valley Christian 6--Robert Ramirez was four for four with two triples and three RBIs for Highland Hall.
