COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Orange Coast Women Win 68th in Row

Orange Coast College won its 68th consecutive women’s swimming meet Friday and tied what is believed to be the state’s longest community college winning streak in any sport.

The Pirates won all 16 events and defeated San Diego Mesa, 114-26, in an Orange Empire Conference meet in San Diego. Orange Coast (5-0) last loss was to San Diego Mesa in 1982. Community college records aren’t kept on the state level, but OCC officials believe the 68 consecutive victories match the record held by the Golden West water polo team and the Long Beach men’s track team.

In the 50 butterfly, Karen Paulitschek (26.75 seconds) won and Christine Williams (26.82) finished second with the two fastest times in the state this season. Veronica Vasquez won the 50 free in 25.93 and the 100 free in 57.41. Mesa is 4-1.

In another Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming meet:

Saddleback 70, Palomar 69--Kathleen Wallace won the 200 free (2:01.53), the 500 free (5:17.24) and the 50 breaststroke (32.73) for Saddleback.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Orange Coast 84, San Diego Mesa 27--Visiting OCC won 12 of 13 events. Tony Harris won the 1,000-yard free in 9:50.49, he fastest time in the state this season. Phil Reget won the 50 free (21.95) and the 100 free (49.77) for the Pirates (5-0). San Diego Mesa dropped to 4-1.

Palomar 68, Saddleback 44--Jason Armison won the 500-yard free (4:59.17) and the 1,000-yard free (10:31.68) for host Saddleback (3-2). Palomar is 4-1.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Cypress 10, Fullerton 3--Rose Ferrante went four for five with a double, triple, two RBIs and one run scored for visiting Cypress (24-3, 8-0). Cypress scored six runs in the first innings and Laura Corson (15-1) allowed four hits, four walks and struck out three. Fullerton is 4-21 and 3-6.

Golden West 1, Saddleback 0 (10 innings)--Gretchen Boch singled in pinch-runner Shawna Savage with two outs in the bottom of the 10th for the Rustlers (24-11, 6-4).

Orange Coast 4, Riverside 3 (10 innings)--Wendy Robinson doubled home Kim Clark, who had reached on an error, for host Orange Coast (22-5, 8-1).

In the John Ward Invitational track meet:

Nate Hosea won the 100 meters in 10.5 seconds to lead Rancho Santiago to third place with 106 points at Rancho Santiago. Grossmont finished first (136 points), Moorpark second (126), Golden West and Antelope Valley tied for fourth (50) and San Diego was sixth (24). Rancho Santiago’s Mark Shores won the 200 meters in 21.2. Rancho Santiago ran a 42.1 in the 400 relay.

In the women’s division, Eva Orozco won the 1,500 in 4:53.1 to lead Rancho Santiago to a third-place finish with 56 points. Moorpark was first (108), Grossmont second (106), Antelope Valley fourth (46), Golden West fifth (14) and San Diego was sixth (6).
