Region : Parole Office Guidelines

The saga of the unwanted parole office continues in the halls of the state Assembly, where legislators representing rival San Gabriel Valley communities are hammering out compromise guidelines for the placement of such facilities.

The office, at 1721 W. Garvey Ave., is the second parole office in Alhambra and is close to the Monterey Park border. Residents in both cities organized last year to oust the facility, which they say has triggered a jump in crime in the area.

But when state Corrections Department officials tried to relocate the parole office near Hastings Ranch in Pasadena, Assemblyman Pat Nolan (R-Glendale), introduced a bill setting stringent standards to keep the office out of Pasadena. Last week, Alhambra and Monterey Park city officials journeyed to Sacramento, where they lobbied for more flexible criteria.

The state Assembly Appropriations Committee delayed action on the bill so Nolan and Assemblyman Charles M. Calderon (D-Whittier), who represents Alhambra and Monterey Park, could work out a compromise. A vote was postponed until April 23.
