World IN BRIEF : VIETNAM : Clarification Told on Cam Ranh Bay

Rep. Patricia Schroeder (D-Colo.), leader of a congressional delegation, said she was told by Vietnamese officials that a reported offer to allow U.S. forces to again use the base at Cam Ranh Bay was taken out of context. The delegation is assessing the military balance in the region and seeking possible sites for U.S. bases. Rep. Tom Ridge (R-Pa.) recently said Vietnamese officials told him they could foresee a day when U.S. warships would be allowed back.
