SAILING : Windspun Is Last to Finish Newport-to-Ensenada Race
The 43rd Newport-to-Ensenada Yacht Race dragged to a close Sunday at 11 a.m. when Windspun drifted across the finish line, the last to finish at Ensenada.
The race started Friday at noon at Newport Beach and was the most windless race from start to finish in the history of the event.
When it was all over, 321 of the 508 starters made the finish line. Officially there were 178 who did not complete the race. Nine were unaccounted for Sunday afternoon.
The Yacht Concert, a 44-foot sloop skippered by Joe Melaso of Dana Point, went aground off Point Nigel, north of Ensenada, Sunday morning. Melaso said he was coming to Ensenada under power and lost their engine. The crew went to shore and no injuries were reported.
