3 From Caltech Named to Academy of Sciences
Three faculty members at Caltech have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, bringing to 66 the number of Caltech faculty and trustees who are members of the academy.
The three are Michael Aschbacher, professor of mathematics; John E. Bercaw, Shell Distinguished Professor and professor of chemistry, and W. Barclay Kamb, Barbara and Stanley R. Rawn Jr. Professor of Geology and Geophysics.
Kamb was chairman of Caltech’s Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences from 1972 to 1983 and served as vice president and provost from 1987 to 1989. His current research focuses on the dynamics and physical properties of glaciers.
Bercaw conducts research in the field of organometallic chemistry.
Aschbacher works in the area of mathematical group theory.
